There are a number of tasks for operating a Waste Material Exchange

Posting Information
During the development phase, the program coordinator receives an e-mail notification after a participant makes an addition or change to the information they wish to post. The coordinator then approves the information, before it goes live. The program coordinator will also prepare factsheets (example – how to conduct a waste audit), newsletters, and other relevant information for posting on the website.

Quarterly newsletter

A newsletter will be written by the waste exchange staff, hard copy will be mailed out and distributed at events and electronic copy in downloadable form will be available on the website and distributed by e-mail (recipient opens e-mail, clicks on link that takes them to the waste exchange website where they view the newsletter).

Senior staff will provide guidance on financial issues, creating partnerships, have final say on proposals and funding applications, and should have knowledge of waste industry.

Program Manager will oversee the day-to-day operation of the program, sources partnerships, writes articles, newsletters and proposals, participates in plant visits (both industry and recyclers), provides direction to the program coordinator ensuring program deliverable are achieved, and has some knowledge of the waste industry.

Program Coordinator (s) first point of contact for program participants, responsible for all information posted on the website, contributes to writing newsletter, articles and other outreach material, establishes relationship with program participants.   Will also be responsible for creating the sponsored  “Link &Logo” or banner on the website

Generating Case Studies

Case studies will be generated as a follow-up to every successful exchange.  Both the waste generator and the material user will be contacted to obtain the full story.

The following information will be gathered from the waste producer:

  • How much material was diverted from landfill
  • What was the cost of disposal
  • Did the waste generator receive any financial compensation for their waste
  • Is it a one time exchange or is it on-going
  • Any other information that the producer would like to share
  • Obtain approval to use the company’s name or provide generic reference to the type of industry

The following information will be gathered from the waste user:

  • What happened to the material (recycled plastic parts used to make totes)
  • Any other information that the user would like to share
  • Obtain approval to use the company’s name or provide generic reference to the type of industry

Related Services
There are several activities that can be undertaken by the Waste Exchange staff for generating revenue.

Waste Audits
Waste Exchange staff can be trained to conduct facility waste audits.  It may be possible to generate money from this service in several ways.  Firstly, an audit service could be offered on a fee for service basis.  Secondly, the Waste Exchanged may receive a contract to offer group audits to a specific industry sector, such as the pharmaceutical industry.

Waste Survey
Waste Exchange staff can administer an industry survey. The survey could be designed to determine waste produced or barriers preventing industrial manufacturers from incorporating recycling practices in their facilities. Waste Exchange staff can perform these types of surveys under contract with associations or government departments.

Brokerage Operations

Revenue generation through the waste exchange is an opportunity to enlarge the potential client base and improve marketing within the waste diversion sector.

The Waste exchange can operate as a brokerage on scalable levels of revenue generation and must work in conjunction with the web presence. Software applications have the ability to not only allow sponsored banner type ads but also charge listing fees as an option, thus opening the brokerage to a market of vendors who have valued leftover waste to exchange or charge for fee.

Below are the different revenue generating structures as they pertain to the web site:

Steps required to proceed

An analysis of the waste exchange industry will be forthcoming. The data requirements for the fields to be captured in the exchange will need to match the information gathering during analysis for the industry. This is a key element in ensuring compatibility after launching the website. Vendors who find that they cannot define their category or product properly or list the necessary information will be dissuaded from listing.

The waste categories (Plastics, Chemicals, etc.) and sub-categories (ABS, HDPE, etc) will need to be determined before implementation, however, the software is flexible and these can easily be edited.
